Singer and actress Hilary Duff recently became engaged to Edmonton Oilers center Mike Comrie. Various sources are reporting that the ring cost the NHL player around $1 million. He bought the 14-carat princess cut diamond ring while in Las Vegas and then proposed to Duff at the Four Seasons in Hawaii while they were on vacation. The pair are also shopping for a home in Beverly Hills.

Think $1 million is a lot for a hockey player to spend? Last year Comrie signed a one-year contract worth $1.125 million to return to the Oilers, the team he began his NHL career with but he also has a family business to fall back on. His family owns The Brick, one of Canada’s biggest sellers of furniture, mattresses, appliances and home electronics.

The fifth graders sat cross-legged on the floor of the Keyser Primary-Middle School library, listening intently as the mother of one of America’s greatest Olympic athletes talked about her son, his dreams, and how they could reach their own dreams if they’re only willing to work at it.
Walking easily in and among the students — only a year or two younger than the students who attend the school where she serves as principal in Baltimore County — Debbie Phelps, mother of gold-medal record holder Michael Phelps, asked the youngsters to name some of the things which they can do to succeed as students.
“Be a good sport.”
“Never give up.”
“Try to work hard.”
“Stay in school.”
“Do your best.”
“Be grateful for family and friends.”
“Stay out of trouble.”
As each student contributed, Hilary Phelps, Debbie’s daughter and Michael’s oldest sister, gave him or her an autographed photo of Michael taken during one of his historic races.
Phelps, who is a motivational speaker and author of “A Mother for All Seasons,” was in Mineral County Friday for the Mineral Daily News-Tribune’s Warm the Children campaign.
She spent most of the morning visiting and speaking with the students at
Keyser Primary-Middle and New Creek Primary schools.
Having been born in Potomac Valley Hospital and attended Westernport Elementary and Bruce High School, Phelps said she felt right at home as some of the students Friday morning even asked if she had known one of their relatives.
“There are children here today that I knew their parents and grandparents; some of them I went to school with,” she said.
One young lady at KPMS even brought her own swimming trophy to show Phelps, who told the youngsters that all three of her children — Hilary, Whitney and Michael — have been active in the sport of swimming since they were young.
The children at the schools also had an opportunity to ask Debbie questions, which ranged from “Does Michael have any pets?” (a bulldog named Herman) to “What is your favorite color?”
“I used to like red,” she quipped, “but I have to say after the 2008 Olympics, gold is the best!”
After lunch at the Stray Cat Wing Shack with representatives of Warm the Children and the Mineral Daily News-Tribune, Phelps participated in a book signing at Main Street Books, then went to Peedbles for the annual WTC Open House.
There, she was joined by Santa Claus in greeting the public and walking about the importance WTC plays in helping to provide warm winter clothing to area needy children.
Although Phelps could not stay over, the WTC weekend will continue tonight with a bluegrass benefit concert at 7 p.m. in the theater at Keyser High School.
Highland Grass, Black Diamond, Gene & Joe and the Valley Troubadours, and Delmas Evans are slated to perform.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
All proceeds will benefit Warm the Children.

Head of the Geological Survey Bureau of Mines, Geological Science and Technology in China, Hai-Tao Fu, said over the weekend that the newly discovered diamond deposit in Wafangdian, in the Liaoning province, is unlikely to affect the global market significantly despite its substantial size, Rough&Polished reported.

The website quoted Xiong Xianzheng, chairman of the Dalian Jewelry Association as saying that, “Global diamond output amounts to approximately 100M carats annually while China accounts for 200,000 carats of the above output. Rough output from new mines in Wafangdian might account for 50% of China’s diamond output. Volumes of diamond production in China, even taking into account the new mines, will achieve merely 0.21% of the global output therefore the deposit will not affect global rough prices.”

The deposit discovered in Wafangdian is said to be the largest scale discovery made by Chinese geologists in the past 30 years. The mine’s reserves are estimated at 210,000 carats of gems including diamonds.

A blue strobe flashing on downtown Bozeman’s tallest building means snow. The beacon - which lights up when Bridger Bowl receives two inches of snow - signals skiers to check the snow report for the powder depth. Bozeman, located in Montana north of Yellowstone National Park, is the type of ski town where the snow isn’t hype, but real.

Bozeman serves as the gateway to three ski resorts: Bridger Bowl, Big Sky, and Moonlight Basin. Bridger Bowl sits about 20 minutes from downtown hotels while Big Sky and Moonlight Basin flank Lone Peak about an hour’s drive south.

Bridger Bowl, Bozeman’s hometown ski area, is a day resort, with lodging, nightlife, and restaurants aplenty in the college town. Moonlight Basin and Big Sky, which neighbor each other, border with hotels, lodges, condominiums, cabins, and vacation homes. Economy hotels line the highway less than a 10-minute drive from the ski areas while luxury lodging claims ski-in-ski out ease. Big Sky, the largest resort, offers more restaurants, nightlife, and shopping in Mountain Mall, while smaller Moonlight garners raves for fine dining in Moonlight Lodge. Both resorts include spas.

All three resorts offer gentle beginner slopes, learn to ski or snowboard programs, and terrain parks. But they excel at buffing out long blue runs for intermediate skiers and corralling steep slopes inbounds for experts.

Bridger Bowl, sprawling across Bridger Mountain north slopes, rolls blue groomers down the Thunder Road ridge and across Wolverine’s undulating meadows, while Powderhorn slices through the area’s belly with an even-pitched swath for arcing wide GS turns. Most beginner runs concentrate in the base area, with upper lifts dropping on to a mix of groomers, mogul fields, and powder stashes. Two lodges in the base area and one mid-mountain provide places to grab a burgers, chili, and homemade baked goodies.

Big Sky and Moonlight Basin flank 11,166-foot Lone Peak, offering the highest elevation skiing in Montana and shared boundaries. Each sell individual resort tickets, but also a single lift ticket valid at both resorts.

Big Sky, enveloping the most terrain and granting the only access to Lone Peak’s summit via the tram, stretches lifts across two faces of Lone Peak and two sides of Andesite Mountain. Blue cruisers ramble off Andesite and zig-zag through Lone Peak’s lower ridges and ravines.

The longest run, which hops across black diamonds to reach groomers, stretches to six miles from Liberty Bowl to Mountain Mall. Lone Peak’s expert upper elevations dish up the A to Z Chutes, wind-scoured cliffs, broad powder bowls, and glade skiing in Dakota Territory. Pinnacles Restaurant atop Andesite serves as the only on-mountain eatery while multiple restaurants rim the base area.

Moonlight Basin tucks under the north side of Lone Peak, its lengthy blue runs sporting seamless grooming on rolling fall line plunges through firs. Horseshoe, the longest run, circles 2.8 miles along the resort’s western perimeter while black diamond runs hide powder and moguls off Lookout Ridge. Experts aim straight for The Headwaters-a line-up of steep chutes cutting a rocky bowl. Dining is available at three base areas-two with temporary facilities and one home to elegant Moonlight Lodge.

All three Bozeman resorts offer a unique steep inbounds backcountry-like experience that requires avalanche beacons. Bridger corrals two immense bowls and ridge hiking from its new experts-only Schlasman’s lift. Experts with tickets valid for Big Sky and Moonlight can catch the Big Sky Tram to Lone Peak’s Summit to descend Moonlight’s several-thousand-foot North Summit Snowfield.

Is it just me or does every jewelry lover have a little bit of a warm spot in their heart for Doris Payne, the jewel thief with the elegant manner? Payne, who will be played by Halle Berry in an upcoming movie, is a graceful beauty with a regal style. That style helped her charm her way into stores, try on whatever she liked and then manage to distract the clerk and tuck a few baubles in her pockets. This was probably not an easy feat for an African-American woman 50 years ago. Payne’s career of crime took her all around the world. But although her glamorous life of crime makes a great movie the reality is a little less cinematic. Last week she was arrested in Orange County, California, accused of taking the tags off a Burberry trench coat and walking out without paying. Payne has proved before that she can’t stay away from stealing. She was sent to prison in 1999 but then while on parole in 2005 she stole two more rings and was sentenced to more time in jail. She finally was out and on parole in 2008 but whether she hasn’t stolen since then or simply hasn’t gotten caught is anyone’s guess. All I know is that 79 years old she’s not ready to stop and for that alone, I’m a little in love with Doris Payne.

Grand Opening - Kerzner Mazagan Beach Resort: Party Arrivals
A few days ago I saw this story that supermodel Naomi Campbell may have received a “blood diamond” from former Liberian president/dictator Charles Taylor. Taylor is currently  trial in an international court in the Netherlands for his many crimes including his contributions to the atrocities in Sierra Leone by trading guns for diamonds. A prosecutor alleged that Taylor had given a large diamond to Campbell that may have been a stone that he had been given along with others to purchase weapons for  Sierra Leone rebels from South African gun dealers. The alleged transaction took place at a  dinner in South Africa in 1997 attended by Nelson Mandela, Campbell, Quincy Jones, and Mia Farrow. Taylor denied the claim. Campbell has supposedly “cooperated with the prosecution” but there’s no word on whether or not she corroborated the story.

It’s a strange twist in a long trial against a man who deserves every condemnation but I wonder why they are bringing Ms. Campbell into this. The idea that a diamond is only a “blood diamond” if it passes from the hands of an African dictator is pretty laughable. Most of the conflict stones passed nimbly through Africa and right into some of the world’s top jewelry stores. I’d wager that Ms. Campbell wore more conflict stones in her modeling days than she ever got from the hands of one evil man trying to impress a beautiful woman. Terrible things happened in Sierra Leone, Taylor played his part but I don’t think splashing the words Naomi Campbell and blood diamond across the news does anything to bring attention to the trials in any positive way.

Last fall we speculated that a huge 507-carat piece of rough diamond might sell for $30 million. The result was even bigger than anticipated. Petra Diamonds announced that the stone sold for $35.3 million which was the highest sale price ever for a rough stone, an impressive $69,557 per carat. Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Company Ltd. bought the rock which has been given the preliminary name “Cullinan Heritage,” at a tender in South Africa. The stone is the 19th largest piece of rough unearthed in history and is exceptional both in terms of size and color and clarity.

It is believed that the buyers will seek to sell the stone in China. The rough stone could yield a “D-flawless” clear polished stone of 170-180 carats, a stone which could sell at a huge price. The diamond will be doubtlessly be scrutinized by teams of expert cutters and all possible strategies will be mapped and modeled before the first cut is made.

There are all sorts of historical trails and wine trails across the world. Now De Beers has created the Diamond Route, a partnership between De Beers and the Oppenheimer family that links eight sites across northern South Africa in a tourism route. The route stretches from Namaqualand on the west coast, to Kimberley (Benfontein, Rooipoort and Dronfield), then north to Tswalu in the Kalahari, through Brenthurst Gardens in Johannesburg eastwards to Ezemvelo Nature Reserve and northwards to the Venetia Limpopo reserve in far Limpopo.  The route makes private conservation land owned by diamond-miner De Beers and the Oppenheimer family accessible to tourists. The route is supposed to offer  insight into South Africa’s cultural, historical, and diamond-mining features.

The Diamond Route website carries De Beers branding and wording on the “positive legacy of diamonds.” a phrase I find a little hard to swallow given the long history of human rights and environmental abuses. What’s particularly interesting is the part about how the “natural areas have been diligently managed over many decades” a phrase which appears right over a picture of a giant hole in the ground. No matter how pretty it looks now, it’s still a scar carved into the earth.

The Diamond Route includes Kimberley, home of the “big hole” as well as a mining museum and the old mining town. Part of the purpose of the Diamond Route is to showcase the “new” De Beers, the one that cares about nature and the future. The concept of the route began back in 2004 but it has taken the last few years to develop it and upgrade accommodations and trails and train guides.  The route also represents a fundamental shift in the way diamonds are marketed. They were once distanced from the places they came from except in the vaguest terms of being “exotic” or from a faraway land. Now in today’s global world, the purchaser is encouraged to visit the places diamonds are mined in the hopes of forging an emotional connection not just with the giver of the stone but with the place itself.

They were surpassed by tweezers, favorite shoes and mascara./ppAs the pawnbroker explains it, “Diamond rings represent 70 percent of the loans we give to women so we are not surprised to see them right at the top of the list alongside mothers and boyfriends, that have a high emotional value but zero material value.”/ppApparently, the majority of women polled ‘would even dump their boyfriend or husband in exchange for £700,000.’/ppTo see the list in full visit: a rel=nofollow target=_blank href=http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1239182/How-women-love-mobile-phones–boyfriends.html#ixzz0bCoGBRTWhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1239182/How-women-love-mobile-phones–boyfriends.html#ixzz0bCoGBRTW/a/pdiv class=blogger-post-footerimg width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2798228790342029090-4024517579667891390?l=allindiamond.blogspot.com’ alt=”//div

On a day not unlike the morning of St. Jude Catholic Church’s first Mass, hundreds of parishioners gathered Dec. 20 to celebrate the church’s 75th anniversary.br /br /From that first Mass held on Christmas morning in 1934 in a small, one-story frame house on the corner of Fourth Avenue and Cedar Road in New Lenox to a Catholic community of 4,000-plus families, St. Jude’s has seen many changes.br /br /Since 1934, the parish has been located in four different buildings, has had twelve pastors, dozens of priests, brothers and deacons to serve the needs of the ever-increasing number of families.br /br /St. Jude has a rich history that dates back prior to the village’s incorporation. The parish commemorated its diamond anniversary with a year-long celebration that began in January and culminated with the special Mass. Dec. 20 also marked the Rev. Don Lewandowski’s 40th anniversary in the priesthood and Bishop James Peter Sartain of the Diocese of Joliet led the service.br /br /Bishop James Peter Sartain of the Diocese of Joliet leads Mass Dec. 20 at St. Jude Catholic Church in New Lenox. It’s been 40 years of doing what I want to do — serving the people — and I’m happy to do that.br /br /Lewandowski was ordained in 1969 and has been part of the Diocese of Joliet for more than 20 years. He’s been with St. Jude since 2006 and said the work parishioners did to celebrate the parish’s 75th year is what deserves recognition.br /br /We had a group of people who stepped up and I’m very happy for the work they did, Lewandowski said.br /br /A reception was held after Mass in the school gym, and the church organized a multitude of events throughout 2009 to celebrate the anniversary. Among them was a 75th Anniversary Dinner in November which brought nearly 300 parishioners out for an afternoon of reminiscing. The Franciscans who founded St. Jude’s, its previous Augustinian priests, as well as those who were instrumental in the life of the parish and school since 1934, were acknowledged during the presentation given by Lewandowski.br /br /Priests and deacons of the Diocese of Joliet gather Dec. 20 at St. Jude Catholic Church in New Lenox for the church’s 75th anniversary ceremony. Earlier in the year the St. Jude Parent’s Club held its dinner dance entitled Diamonds Are Forever to honor the anniversary.br /br /A series of three anniversary banners also commemorated the year and were created by parishioners Judy Mudore, Mary Lee Gustafson, Dorothea Hanna and Julie Tillman, along with Fr. Don Bates. The first depicts the St. Jude logo — the outline of four people from the four directions from which parishioners are drawn, all reaching into the heart of Jesus. The number 75 is in the background. A second banner was hung at Easter and tells the story of each parishioners’ journey through baptism to the eucharist. The third, revealed on Pentecost Sunday, shows the anniversary theme, Soaring at 75.br /br /The priests, deacons, school and parish staff and parishioners of St. Jude look forward to beginning the next 75 years of serving God through serving his people, said Communications Coordinator Marcy Anderson.br /br /A 75th Anniversary prayer was written by Fr. Michael Schweifler, who was an associate pastor at the church and passed away in July.div class=blogger-post-footerimg width=’1′ height=’1′ src=’https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/2798228790342029090-313675550239563053?l=allindiamond.blogspot.com’ alt=”//div
